Ten wins in a season is a pretty impressive feat. And with three rounds still to go, Sebastian Vettel could yet match Michael Schumacher’s best of 13, set in 2004. The world champion insists record hunting is not on his agenda - but that doesn’t mean he won’t gratefully accept them. Sunday in Korea saw Vettel celebrate his second title in style, his victory wrapping up Red Bull’s second constructors’ crown. Now he’s taking it race by race - and looking forward to a Sunday drive in his home town of Heppenheim…

Q: Anyone who had thought that you would ease up after winning the drivers’ championship was much mistaken - another victory in Korea. What were your feelings about this race win?
Sebastian Vettel:
Yes, it was a fantastic day and a fantastic win, indeed. To also win the constructors’ championship with the team means a lot. It was a phenomenal race - we had such good pace and it was so much fun on the track. The first lap was very important. The start was okay - definitely not the best start I ever had - but it was important to stay ahead of Jenson (Button). I was not able to get past Lewis (Hamilton) in Turn Three, even though it was close. On the run into Turn Four I had a little bit of an overshoot and I was not sure whether to go left or right. Quite late I decided to go left and try it from there. I knew that if I tried it from the outside he would brake as late as possible and it would be difficult, but then I said, ‘Why not? Try it’. I nearly went off track under braking, but he was very fair in that moment. It was very important to us to get track position. I was not really comfortable with the long straights, and a lot of head wind meant it was difficult to get away. I could always see in the mirrors that the car behind me was getting bigger and bigger. It was really a tough race in terms of breaking the slipstream, breaking the tow. At the back end of the stint it was very important to be quicker than the rest and to be able to gain, as this was exactly the vulnerable point from the last race. It was good to come back one week later, maybe not with the best of preparation, after a few drinks on the Sunday after the Japanese race, and to be able to improve exactly that. We were really happy to see that we were the strongest at the end of the stints.

Q: Your race engineer Rocky tried to spoil your fun, telling you to be careful with your tyres. Still you managed to set the fastest lap at the end of the race...
SV:
It is a silly thing, and probably more for one’s own ego. He said he would kill me, so I might not be in India. For me it would feel wrong to win the championship without setting the fastest lap as well. There are no points for this, no glory really, but I have done it now and I am pleased, although according to Rocky it might be the end of my life. Also I had requested he give me as much information as possible on the race development, and what it was necessary to do during the race to be safe and stay ahead. Of course, in some ways you can feel what the tyres are doing. It was definitely the key, to take some speed off at the most critical points.

Q: How is the mood now, having won both the drivers’ and the constructors’ championships?
SV:
It seems to be very difficult for people to imagine what this really means, for the whole team and the whole factory. It is not only a boost for the people that are working at the track, where everyone sees that they are making a difference. There is also much more taking place behind the scenes: the team in Milton Keynes is working day in and day out, every day and every month of the year. It is down to them to build those two competitive cars which we have on the track and are able to push to their limits. It was a lot of fun on the track on Sunday, but also a lot of pressure has fallen off my shoulders after I crossed the line. Sure, people expect us now to lean back and take it easy, but this is not our approach, as we are here to win races and to do our best. And we managed to do exactly that. We had the chance to win and we took it.

With glitz, glamour and a paddock filled with personalities, Formula One racing is no wall flower. In fact, from motorhomes to lap times, aerodynamic innovations to team kit, this sport is all about one-upmanship - and not the quiet type of one-upmanship either. It’s the brash sort, bandied about with a flourish and a swagger.

But F1 has another, quieter side, with armies of unsung technical brains working in the background, making the subtlest changes to seek out performance wherever they can. Beneath the sleek, shiny and sponsorship-littered outer skin of F1 cars there is a surprising amount of development going on, even in one area where you wouldn’t expect it - the engine.

Yes, the design and construction of the engine is essentially ‘frozen’ due to homologation requirements, but there is one important area ‘beneath the bonnet’ where teams, stymied by greater regulation stringency elsewhere, can discover extra performance. That is in the field of race fuel and oil lubricants.

One team intent on making the most of any untapped performance in this area is McLaren, and their long-standing technology partner ExxonMobil. Like their F1 rivals, they are only too aware that fuel and oil are not simply sundries required to power and lubricate the engine - the quality of their composition actually has a critical influence on a car’s pace.

“Often people confuse the terms efficiency and reliability,” explains McLaren managing director Jonathan Neale. “They think it’s about housekeeping to keep the car alive. But in actual fact what I hope people are beginning to realise is that we are talking about real lap-time performance.

“And whenever you use the term efficiency, synonymous with that is high performance. If you look at what happened on the homologation of engines and the drive for fuel efficiency then engines have become increasingly more and more fuel efficient.”

The basic equation is simple. A more fuel efficient engine requires less fuel to go a set distance whilst producing a given power output than a less fuel efficient one producing the same power. Less fuel means less weight - and a lighter car is a faster car.

And a recent regulation change - the ban on refuelling introduced last season - has seen oil and fuel suppliers take on an even more essential role in boosting the pace of cars up and down the pit lane.

“Now we have to carry with us enough fuel to race until the end. If we can get greater fuel efficiency from the engine there should be a greater ‘bang for our buck’, as you’re carrying less weight of fuel around,” continues Neale. “Ten kilos less fuel in the car at the beginning of the race is three and half tenths of lap time every lap of the race. It’s a huge amount when you consider the difference between cars on the grid is often hundredths of a second.”

Although the composition of fuel is tightly bound by the FIA’s technical regulations, fuel companies can push the boundaries as far as they can, producing a number of ‘blends’ throughout the season, sometimes tuned for the demands of specific circuits or even specific weather conditions, and sometimes to simply improve overall fuel efficiency.

“Fuel is very heavily regulated,” admits Neale, “but typically we would see one or two fuel steps per year - and that’s down to continued innovation. Formula One and its partners have fantastic innovation and execution, so there is constant innovation and search for performance improvements."

But Mobil 1’s involvement with McLaren goes much further than fuel. Engine and gearbox oil play a critical role too. Not only can these lubricants help improve power and fuel efficiency - any reduction of friction in the engine or gearbox boosts pace - they also perform an important diagnostic role, allowing technicians to keep tabs on engine wear rates by monitoring the levels of metal traces present in the oil.

“Formula One engines are incredibly powerful, often pulling in excess of a 750 brake horsepower for a 2.4 litre V8 engine,” Neale explains. “And what we are trying to do is to get all of that brake horsepower in a controlled way to the driver. All of that power is delivered through the engine up through the gearbox.”

Recent rule changes have sharpened the focus on engine and gearbox oil all the more, with engines now expected to last for eight races and gearboxes for five. Durability has become the new mantra, and with engine lubricants expected to withstand forces up to 8,500 times greater than gravity, as well as performing in temperatures of more than 300 degrees Celsius, oil suppliers have a big task on their hands.

But it’s worth the effort. As little as a couple of seasons ago, engine wear was such that an engine nearing the end of its multi-race cycle would be significantly less powerful than one at the start of its life. That is no longer the case, in large part thanks to advancements in lubricant technology. Drivers no longer fear dramatic performance losses in older engines - and teams don’t fear failures as they used to.

“Over the last few years we’ve been working on the products we have and the oil chemistry,” says Neale. “And that’s given us a phenomenal efficiency improvement, like an 80 percent reduction in wear of metals. That means there’s more power available for the driver for longer. With engines and gearboxes needed to last for multiple races, it means that the power lasts.

“So when a driver picks up his engine for the next race he knows that he’s not got a historical loss of power that would have come previously. The engines have high power, high performance and low loss, as does the gearbox - right from the start of a programme to the end of it.”

McLaren have enjoyed excellent engine and gearbox reliability in recent years - Lewis Hamilton suffered their last gearbox failure at the 2010 Hungarian Grand Prix, and Heikki Kovalainen endured their last engine failure at the 2008 Chinese round - and the team believe much of this can be attributed to their long-standing relationship with their oil supplier.

“Formula One teams have to be good at everything,” says Neale. “They simultaneously have to be experts in operational strategy, manufacturing processes, tyre technology, oils, fuels, carbon fibre, machined metals, you name it. It’s not possible to have that without longevity.

“Mobil 1 have phenomenal resources. They have kept all of their research and development programmes in house, so they have all the tribologists, who are the guys that work on the oil and lubricants. They really are some of the unsung heroes of F1. Your manufacturing people, people in the research labs and tribologists are vital and it’s a great thing to recognise some of the hard work that they’ve done. It’s good to shine a bit of light on the working of a car.”

At 17 years and counting, McLaren’s alliance with its supplier is already one of the longest between a team and oil company in F1. And with a new, five-year contract signed at the start of the year, the relationship is clearly going from strength to strength.

It’s a relationship that could become even more valuable to McLaren in the future as Formula One prepares to move to a new, more efficient engine formula - a move that should allow them to utilise past as well as future developments in fuel and lubricant technology.

“If I look at the change over the last three years, then there’s no doubt in my mind that rate of change will be just as intense in five years’ time,” concludes Neale. “As we look towards 2014, with the sport - correctly in my view - moving to being more energy conscious and a V6 engine, it offers us the next real step to getting alongside the engine manufacturers to look into the chemistry within the oil and the fuel and also the chemistry of the metal in the engine.

“We are working to a homologated engine, but there’s an awful lot more that we’ve learnt that we haven’t been able yet to deploy, and we look forward to doing that when we have the next engine with Mercedes.”

DRIVER PROFILE :  LEWIS HAMILTON

Lewis Carl Davidson Hamilton (born Stevenage,[1] 7 January 1985) is a British Formula One racing driver from England, currently racing for the McLaren Mercedes team.

Hamilton was named after the American sprinter Carl Lewis.[2] At the age of ten, he approached McLaren team principal, Ron Dennis, at an awards ceremony and told him "I want to race for you one day."; less than three years later, he was signed by McLaren and Mercedes-Benz to their Young Driver Support Programme.[2] After winning the British Formula Renault, European Formula Three and GP2 championship,[2] he became a McLaren F1 driver for 2007, making his Formula One debut 12 years after his initial encounter with Dennis. Coming from a mixed-race background, with a black father and white mother,[2][3] Hamilton is often labelled "the first black driver in Formula One".[2][3][4][1][5]

In his first season in Formula One, Hamilton set numerous rookie records and finished second in the 2007 Formula One Championship, behind Kimi Räikkönen by just one point. He has stated that he wants to stay with the McLaren team for the rest of his F1 career.[6]

Milka Duno

Birthday: April 22, 1972 ? Height/weight: 5-4/120
Hometown: Caracas, Venezuala ? Residence: Miami

Milka Duno has attracted attention worldwide for her racing talents and educational background. The 2000 "Venezuelan Auto Racing Driver of the Year" is a naval engineer with four master's degrees -- in Organizational Development, Naval Architecture, Maritime Business and Marine Biology. She earned the last three simultaneously.

Duno's path to being a successful female racer was far from typical. In 1998, Duno was invited by a friend to participate in a Porsche Driving Clinic. The rest, as they say - is history. In 2007, Milka scored a second-place finish in the 24 Hours At Daytona – earning the highest finish ever by a female driver in the 45-year history of the race. She also made history by becoming the first Latina to qualify and race in the Indianapolis 500.

Duno also has the role of Kellie "Gearbox," a race car driver, in the movie that is based on the 1960's classic anime series "Speed Racer." The Warner Bros. movie is scheduled for release on May 9.

Sarah Fisher

? Birthday: Oct. 4, 1980
? Hometown: Commercial Point, Ohio
? Residence: Indianapolis ? Height/weight: 5-3/120

Sarah Fisher announced in February that she would be doing double duty as a driver and team owner of Sarah Fisher Racing.

Fisher was exposed to life at the racetrack at an early age. Her parents would take her to the track to watch her father drive sprint cars. Her first racing experience came as a 5 year old when her parents fitted her for her first race car -- a quarter-midget. After winning the World Karting Association Grand National Championships three times, Fisher caught the eye of open-wheel veteran Derrick Walker, who signed her at the tender age of 19 to his IndyCar Series team. She became the third female to race in the Indianapolis 500.

In 2000, Fisher became the third woman to compete in the Indianapolis 500. She continued to write history at a young age when she claimed a second-place finish at the IndyCar Series' first race at Homestead Miami Speedway, to date the best result ever by a woman in open-wheel racing. She went on to become the first female to earn a pole position and is the fastest woman to qualify for the Indianapolis 500 with a four-lap average of 229.439 mph.

Sebastian Vettel would be the first to admit that the ride to his maiden title in 2010 was pretty rocky. At the season finale in Abu Dhabi four drivers were in with a shout at the championship and it was only Vettel’s commanding performance which secured him the drivers’ crown. But that was last year.

2011 has been altogether different. Whereas last year he didn’t lead the standings until the Yas Marina results were in, this year he’s led throughout; from March’s Australian Grand Prix to this weekend’s Suzuka decider, the title has been his to lose. For the past few months it’s not been a question of if Vettel would do the double, but rather of when.

Distinguished rivals including former world champions Jenson Button, Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton have been left to fight over the scraps whilst the frequently untouchable Vettel has glided towards a second successive championship barely buffeted. All things considered, it bears an uncanny resemblance to the early career of another German driver, one who went on to claim seven titles.

Indeed, his success this year has had a distinctly Schumacher-esque quality. He has been the top dog on Saturday, taking 12 from a possible 15 pole positions, and only once has he failed to make the front row of the grid. Rewind to 2004 when Herr Schumacher last dominated a season and the German legend took a comparatively meagre eight poles. In fact, just two more for Vettel would see him match Nigel Mansell’s 1992 record of 14 in a season.

On Sundays too, nobody has held a candle to Vettel. Nine wins from 15 races would be dominant enough, but when Vettel’s not been busy winning he’s consistently finished on the podium - only once (ironically at his home round in Germany) has he failed to make the top three. It’s an incredible feat, emphasised by the tally of wins and podiums scored by his rivals.

Hamilton has two wins, two podiums and zero poles. Button has three wins, eight podiums and zero poles. And Alonso has one win, seven podiums and zero poles. Perhaps most tellingly, team mate Mark Webber has zero wins, eight podiums and three pole positions. Slouches they aren’t, but when it comes to racing - and winning - all have been forced to squabble over the crumbs dropping from Vettel’s trophy-laden table.

So why has Vettel triumphed this season? The majestic RB7 must take a hefty share of the credit. Cunningly innovative, stunningly quick and flawlessly reliable, the 2011 Red Bull has picked up the bar, run with it, and set it much, much higher than the team have ever managed before. Rival engineers have been forced to look on, swallow their envy and try to replicate Adrian Newey’s masterpiece from the get go.

But the car can’t take all the credit. It’s simply been the perfect charge for the perfect champion, most of the time. Webber has been equipped with exactly the same machinery but hasn’t won once - the 24 year-old German has always held the advantage. Much of that advantage has been rammed home in qualifying, when Vettel’s single-lap performance has been peerless. His ability to deliver when it counts, even at tracks thought not to favour the Red Bull such as Spa and Monza, has rarely let him down, ensuring a clear track ahead for the start of the race.

But pole positions don’t guarantee wins, especially with rivals of the calibre of Vettel’s and especially when those rivals have DRS and KERS at their disposal, technology that has made overtaking a far more realistic proposition this season. This year more than ever, P1 on the grid doesn’t necessarily equal victory. But for Vettel it has. Eight times out of nine.

And even when he hasn’t started from pole, and even when Red Bull have had to give best to McLaren or Ferrari in terms of raw race pace, Vettel has kept his cool. Notching back the hot-headedness he displayed at times last season, he’s remained calm and collected even when he or the team have made mistakes. He’s not just won races he should have won - he’s also won some he shouldn’t have.

That cool head has been combined with plenty of heart. He certainly hasn’t lost any of the fiery skills that secured him his maiden drivers’ crown - his nail-biting pass on Alonso at Monza proved that. Plus, with number one plastered to his car, Vettel’s confidence in his own abilities has soared. Matching skill and consistency with startlingly raw pace and ambition, over the last 15 races Vettel has stepped into a different league, dismissing any suggestion that his title last year was a lucky fluke and proving instead that 2010 was merely the beginning.

So Formula One’s youngest points’ scorer (USA 2007), youngest pole sitter (Italy 2008), youngest race winner (Italy 2008) and youngest world champion (Abu Dhabi, 2010) has become its youngest double world champion (Japan, 2011), aged just 24 years and 98 days. And, just four years into his career, Vettel’s barely started. Schumacher better watch his back. There’s a new record breaker in town.

Congratulations Sebastian!

FORMULA ONE HAS NEW TEAMS & MORE :

THE "THEME FOR 2011" SEEMS TO BE WHAT WAS NEW IS OLD...AGAIN !

OK,...YES
Michael Schumacher IS BACK, THE MASTER OF MODERN  F1 HAS NOW RETURNED TO BATTLE A YOUNGER SET OF DRIVERS WHO NEVER HAD THE CHANCE TO TEST THEIR SKILLS AGAINST HIM.

THAT ALONE IS A CREDIT TO HIS FORMIDABLE ACCOMPLISHMENTS ALREADY AS A 7 TIME WORLD CHAMPION...THE FACT THAT HE IS STILL INTERESTED (ADDICTED ?) IN TAKING ON THE CHALLENGE & RISK OF A FULL TIME DRIVE IN AN F1 RACER IS ALL ANYONE NEEDS TO KNOW ABOUT HIS DETERMINATION AND ABILITY.

THE MAN IS A MASTER...WILLING TO THROW IT DOWN WITH ANYONE IN F1 TODAY.

BUT....WHO IS HE DRIVING FOR ???...MERCEDES !!!!....WHAT THE *#^* &....WHY ?

YEP, HE TOOK THE CHAMPIONSHIP WINNING TEAM FROM (BRAWN GP) WHICH YOU SHOULD REMEMBER WAS THE LOSER TEAM OF HONDA F1 AND WITH THE ADOPTION OF THE MB POWER, THEY DOMINATED ENOUGH TO WIN THE F1 TITLE IN 2009.

IT MAY TAKE A FEW RACES TO FIGURE OUT WHAT THE HELL IS REALLY UP HERE, BUT IT HAS BECOME QUITE OBVIOUS THAT BRAWN HAVE "LEARNED" FROM THE NASCAR BOOK AS TO HOW TO "EQUALIZE THE FIELD"...& INTIMIDATE AS WELL !!!

WITH "SHUE" IN THE "CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM" HE STANDS TO PUT ALL HIS SKILL ON THE LINE NOW, AS ROSS BRAWN HAS THROWN IN FULL TIME AS THE MERCEDES GP TEAM NOW, WHICH BY THE WAY GIVES MERCEDES AN EQUAL OPPORTUNITY TO FERRARI TO WIN THE CONSTRUCTORS TITLE IN 2010 !!!

FURTHER WITH THE EXIT OF BOTH HONDA LAST YEAR AND (THANKFULLY) TOYOTA THIS YEAR, WHO WERE THE BIGGEST LOSERS IN F1 HISTORY, WE HAVE A WHOLE NEW SET OF TEAMS NOW TO CONTEST FOR LAST PLACE HONORS !!!

VETTEL HAS BY WINNING THE FIRST SEASON POLE, SHOWN THAT TORRO ROSSO AKA RED BULL CAN  CONTINUE TO WIN RACES...& RENAULT IS ON THE GAME TOO !
BUT IT LOOKS LIKE THIS SEASON IS GOING TO BE BACK TO "BUSINESS AS USUAL", WITH THE MAJOR BATTLE SHAPING UP BETWEEN FERRARI AND MERCEDES AGAIN.

IF YOUR A GAMBLER, BET ON F1 THIS YEAR !!!...YOU CAN WIN WITH FERRARI & MB, THE REST, WHILE THEY MAY CAPTURE A FEW WINS HERE & THERE...WILL LOSE.
