Below you will find a "portrait" of  Chuck Jordan, who was very interested in helping me to become a better designer, & I was just a kid in my teens, but he took me under his wing, showed me inner studios at GM, allowed his designers to spend time (on the clock) talking with me about my car designs, took me to car shows, gave me rides in one off concept cars & even let me DRIVE the Monza GT concept car during a parade event in my hometown !!!

Ya gotta love a guy who dose all that, and did not have to. He was the "top dog" at GM, and took the time to invest in a "kid down the street" who drew cars. It was an extraordinary opportunity for me, and certainly shaped the things to come in my life. I owe Chuck a gratitude for his recognition of my talents & the willingness to step in to further my abilities with his personal attention.

He is One of the True Masters of Automotive Design ; Chuck Jordan.

"I will grant you that I have gone in a direction that today is a very, very different design from anything out there in production or even customization, but this on purpose. I feel NO affinity with Industrial Design at all, rather I am focused on a Fine Art approach, which in my case is a bit Surrealistic, Abstract, & True Pop Fine Art.

My purpose is not to remake pictures of "cars" but to create personal images of Custom Cars that strike a chord within a person that inspires them to do whatever they do the best...and to build the EXACT dream car THEY want to own !!!

Cars are the ART FORM of the 21 century, IMO, everybody has one or two...and when was the last time YOU bought a Canvas Painting ?????...for thousands of dollars !!!...yeah Right, me either,..It is a DEAD Medium. The CUSTOM CAR IS ART in it's Highest Form. It is interactive, conceptual, abstract, and realistic ALL AT THE SAME TIME !!!!

The first shake-down has been held at Fiorano of a very special one-off, the P540 Superfast Aperta, built for an American client. The car, the second in a new Special Projects programme created by Ferrari to meet requests from the most discerning clients and collectors to create truly unique models, is based on the 599 GTB Fiorano and was inspired by a Carrozzeria Fantuzzi-designed Ferrari built specifically for the 1968 Fellini film, Toby Dammit, itself inspired by one of the tales of Edgar Allan Poe.

The P540 Superfast Aperta's proud new owner, Edward Walson, son of John Walson, the inventor of cable TV, approached Ferrari in 2008 to produce a modern reinterpretation of the gold-coloured car in the film. "I had always dreamed of designing sports cars," Walson explains, "and when I saw this film the decision came of its own accord: one day I would have 'my' Ferrari."




In accordance with the Special Project's approach to producing such individual one-offs, the P540 Superfast Aperta respects all existing international safety and homologation requirements and is thus road legal. The car was designed by Pininfarina and built in Maranello, and the client was directly involved in each stage of its development. As the 599 GTB Fiorano donor car is a coupé, considerable effort went into strengthening the chassis by using finite element analysis in development and the increase in weight was kept down to just 20 kg by employing carbon-fibre extensively. From the initial sketches to the final, road-legal car took just 14 months.

As the client took delivery of the car at Fiorano his excitement was understandable: "This is the most special Christmas present of my life."

This special car's colour was inspired by the film "Toby Dammit", one of the three episodes of the film "Histoires Extraordinaires" made in 1968 based on stories by Edgar Allan Poe.

"Toby Dammit", the third of the three episodes, directed by Federico Fellini, with Terence Stamp Salvo Randone and Milena Vukotic, based on the story "Never Bet The Devil Your Head".

The other two episodes, "Metzengerstein" and "William Wilson", were directed by Roger Vadim and Louis Malle.

Charles M. Jordan was born in California in 1927. In 1945 he first graduated from MIT Engineering School and then won the Fisher Body National Design Contest. Harley Earl saw his work and asked him to join the GM design staff, where he started in 1948. His earliest classic was the 1955 Motorama Cameo, the first smooth sided pickup. Then he went to Euclid and later designed the Aerotrain. He returned to automobiles - the 1958 Corvette is one of his - became head of Cadillac design, and he signed off some excellent cars when he was at Opel at the end of the sixties.



Jordan’s career at the US end of GM is comprehensive. He worked closely with Earl, Mitchell and Rybicki. Before he became head of the Cadillac studio in 1959 he worked on such milestones as 1958 XP 700 Corvette concept and at his departure to Opel he had been head of all American and foreign small cars from 1962. At home again in 1970 he participated in big projects as the J Car (1982 Cavalier, which started as the U-project in 1975) and when the Rybicki period started he became his second in command, and as part of an integrated vertical hierarchy, accessible only through Jordan, all design was to a large extent placed under him.


This man who has been well known for not suffering fools gladly, he has called interviews off less than gracefully, calling them a waste of time; cutting off his designers enthusiastic descriptions asking “why don’t we put it in the drivers manual?”, and writing letters to Automotive News saying exactly what he thinks about to-day’s GM design (hated digital development – “a car like the Aztek would not have happened had a real model been developed”), and who once commanded 1300 people in six studios, has a very obvious mellow side too. Visiting enthusiasts clubs, and teaching high school pupils are parts of his daily schedule now. Valhalla High School in El Cajon has some very privileged Art students, that’s where he teaches car design on a voluntary basis for classes filled to capacity.



His continental career set new standards for GM. As design director for Opel from 1967 he developed new standards both for design and organisation. The elegant Manta coupe was his, and some of the bread and butter Rekords were very competently done. He worked closely with Bob Lutz there, which might have helped the development of his personal style considerably. His Opel interest never waned and he was closely involved with the 1986 Omega/Carlton as well as the 1991 Astra, and when he did the production version of the sensational Opel GT in 1968 he worked closely with European body manufacturers like Chausson and Brissoneau et Lotz.



But how will history judge his six-year’s reign? He took over in October 1986 and knew he had to retire at age 65, in 1992. He also knew that six years is not a long time in a car’s life. He may have had a clear vision of where GM design should head – the renaming of the division is an indication of that. GM Styling was the pre-war name, then in 1972 that was changed to Design Staff. In 1992 the name was again altered, to Design Center. Some might say that this was the most significant break with the past during this epoch.



In his “The Art of American Car Design” (1988) Professor C. Edson Armi writes, “…Unlike certain business judgements, taste is an elusive thing that does not improve by conference calls. Someone at the top of General Motors has got to have it, and use it.



Chuck Jordan is well informed on Art, current and old, he was extremely knowledgeable about the history of car design, especially the European angle, and always a very individualistic person.

But whatever judgment history will pass on him, there can be no doubt that with his “corporate design” philosophy at least prepared the ground for the current Brand Character philosophy of all General Motors designs today.
